The Sound of the Burden
The Bridge of the Cross: Day 2 of 5

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28 NIV
I can still remember the sound of the wooden cross dragging across the tile floor of that quiet church.
It sounded like burden.
It sounded like pain.
It sounded like suffering.
As the cross moved down the nave, I thought about the weight Jesus carried. He carried the physical weight of the cross, but He also willingly carried the weight of our sin. When the cross reached the altar, it was raised and covered with a black cloth. The church seemed to become even darker.
There was no rushing toward Easter morning.
Before we could celebrate the empty tomb, we had to remember the cross.
We often want to rush past the painful parts of our own stories too. We want a solution, a celebration, or proof that everything will be okay.
We do not want to remain in the uncertainty of Friday while we wait for Sunday.
But Jesus understands the weight of Friday.
He understands pain, rejection, grief, exhaustion, betrayal, and fear. When we bring our burdens to Him, we are not speaking to someone who stands at a distance from suffering. We are speaking to the One who entered into it.
Jesus does not ask us to pretend that our burdens are light. He invites us to stop carrying them alone.
What burden are you dragging behind you today?
Perhaps it is anxiety, grief, regret, resentment, illness, uncertainty, or responsibility that was never yours to carry. You may have become so accustomed to its weight that you no longer remember what it feels like to put it down.
The cross reminds me that I have somewhere to bring it. The cross is my bridge to hope and for that I am forever grateful.
Questions to Ponder
What burden feels especially heavy today?
Have you become accustomed to carrying something Jesus is asking you to release?
What would it look like to place that burden at the foot of the cross?
Prayer for Today
Jesus, You know the weight of suffering. You see the burdens I carry publicly and the ones I hide from everyone else. Help me bring them honestly to You. Give me the courage to release what I was never meant to carry alone and receive the rest only You can provide. Amen.
