Teaching Children to Live Quietly

3 min read

Children are still learning how to navigate their emotions, insecurities, friendships, and fears. Sometimes their own struggles spill over onto someone else. Hurt people can hurt people, and often they don't fully understand the damage they leave behind.

As adults, we can see the hurt unfolding. We can recognize when someone is being excluded, ignored, or treated unkindly. And as parents, we have a responsibility to teach our children another way.

We can teach them that they don't have to participate in every argument, respond to every insult, or join every conversation about someone else. We can teach them that kindness is not weakness. That silence is not always surrender. That they can walk away without losing their worth.

And perhaps most importantly, we can demonstrate those lessons ourselves.

Because our children are watching how we respond when life doesn't go our way. Are we teaching them to retaliate, or are we teaching them to pray? Are we encouraging comparison, or are we showing them how to be content? Are we modeling peace, or are we allowing someone else's behavior to determine our happiness?

Those are difficult questions. And believe me, I'm asking them of myself, too.

Finally, living a quiet life doesn't mean you have only a handful of friends or that you stop participating in the world. It doesn't mean you stop standing up for what is right. It means you choose where to place your energy.

It means pouring love, empathy, and encouragement into others. It means refusing to participate in someone else's ugliness. It means building a relationship with Jesus and allowing that relationship to shape how you treat people. It means learning that you don't have to have the last word.

Perhaps living quietly is less about how much noise surrounds us and more about how much noise we allow into our hearts.

Social media will keep scrolling. People will keep talking. Feelings will get hurt. Friendships will change. Someone will always have something to say. But we have a choice.

We can spend our days trying to understand everyone else's actions, or we can spend our days seeking Him.

We can hold tightly to the hurt, or we can open our hands and give it to God.

We can choose resentment, or we can choose joy.

I personally choose joy!

Prayer for Today

Heavenly Father, I know that many who are reading this devotion may be feeling hurt, lonely, or sad. I pray that You open their hearts to Your love and joy, reminding them that they are never alone in their struggles. Help us surrender our worries, frustrations, and heartaches to You so that we may find stillness and peace in the midst of life's noise. May we teach our children how to live a quiet life centered on You, showing them through our own actions how to extend kindness, offer grace, and always praise Your goodness. I ask that the Holy Spirit guide our steps, quiet our minds, and fill our hearts with a joy that cannot be taken away by the words or actions of others. May we learn to let go of what we cannot control, trust You with what we do not understand, and find comfort in knowing that You are always with us.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

Share Your Joy Today.

About Me

IMG_3129_edited.png

Hi, I’m Wendy—a wife, mother, writer, and strong believer in Jesus. I began writing devotionals for my three sons as a way to share God’s Word and encourage them in their faith. Writing is a vulnerable craft, and I share my thoughts knowing that I do not have all the answers—nor do I pretend to know everything about the Bible. I am simply sharing what God places on my heart. My hope is that these words bring you joy, encourage you in your own journey, and plant a seed in your heart that reminds you just how deeply your Father in Heaven loves you.
